Njan Steve Lopez (2014) - Review Roundup

Not appearing preachy even for a moment, the movie is a powerhouse of human values. Selfless love and compassion, forgiveness, humanity, integrity, courage - during the runtime of less than two hours, Steve takes us through these integral qualities that make us worthy human beings. He values every single life around him, however small or detached it is. He refuses to give up on life, in contrast to his uncle who indulges in drugs and other intoxications when challenged by life to extreme. The social activist in Rajeev Ravi seems to reflect on how we are treating our innocent, quality young minds. Njan Steve Lopez is serious cinema. If you have a good taste for non-commercial, intense and realistic movies, it's a must-watch for you. (Read more)

Yes it is true that the kind of offbeat treatment given to the film won’t please the audience of the conventional Malayalam entertainer movies. But what excited me was the fact that how brilliantly they included humor and realistic characters in to this script. If you are willing to invest a little time to go behind the instances which at first look seems irrelevant, the movie will offer you some touching moments. Overall Njan Steve Lopez is a haunting tale. If you haven’t liked the film Annayum Rasoolum, please don’t go for this movie. Let lovers of this kind of cinema enjoy their cup of coffee with the required solitude. (Read more)

Farhaan - who plays Lopez - shows off his special genes for an actor, a potential that could be tapped immensely in future. His wonderfully expressive eyes, short, quick strides, thick web of knotty hair amply add to the naivete that fashions Lopez. Njan Steve Lopez is a film that will not disappoint even those who look for vigour and colour. It has warmth that glows every now and then and it is hard to resist. (Read more)

Eventually NSL works reasonably well as a dark coming of age film with a clear social conscience of its own. This may not work for just about everyone but Rajeev Ravi seems to be sure about the kind of films he wants to make. Now it is time for the discerning viewer to watch it and decide if it works for him/her or not. (Read more)

Rajiv's 'Njaan Steve Lopez' is extraordinarily layered, remarkably relevant, and highly recommended. (Read more)

Ignore the Camus reference and the promise of a study of drift hardening into responsibility and the movie is a perfectly watchable thriller. The greater the emergence of a spine in an otherwise prone character—a feeling reinforced by the pillow-level shots of Steve lolling in bed—the more plot-driven the movie gets. . (Read more)

No two ways about it, Njan Steve Lopez is definitely not a bad attempt. The film in fact, tries to move away from the conventional format and expects the viewer to create their own worlds of imagination with some random thoughts. But sadly in the process, the narrative loses its grip. (Read more)
